North American tenor Michael Hendrick is one of the most respected tenors in the world today with his impressively diverse range of experience in opera and concert.
In upcoming appearances, Mr. Hendrick will sing as the tenor soloist with The Philadelphia Orchestra in Mahler’s Das Klagende Lied under Vladimir Jurowski. He will sing the title role in Verdi’s Aroldo with the ABAO in Bilbao, Spain, and he will return to the 2009 Festival Amazonas Ópera in Manaus, Brazil to take on two debut roles, the title role in Samson et Dalilah, and Enée in Berlioz’s Les Troyens, both led by Luiz Fernando Malheiro. He is also set to appear at the Teatro Cervantes in Málaga, Spain for Laca in Janacek’s Jenufa, and will return to Samson in Samson et Dalilah, with LIV Festival Ópera at the Palacio de la Opera in La Coruña (Galicia), Spain in the Fall of 2009. Mr. Hendrick will be featured in an upcoming book, One Hundred Years of Service: The Berry Alumni Association by Ouida Dickey, as a representative of Berry College’s most oustanding graduates. As a part of Berry College’s centenal celebration, Mr. Hendrick will present a concert at Berry Collage on May 30, 2008. At the beginning of 2008, Mr. Hendrick appeared as Florestan in Beethoven’s Fidelio, conducted by Gerard Korsten and directed by John Pascoe, with Palm Beach Opera in West Palm Beach, Florida. Since that time, Mr. Hendrick recently returned to the Metropolitan Opera to cover the title role in Benjamín Britten’s Peter Grimes, conducted by Donald Runnicles and Directed by John Doyle. Michael Hendrick is currently appearing at the 2008 Festival Amazonas Ópera in Manaus, Brazil, led by Luiz Fernando Malheiro, as Bacchus in Strauss’ Ariadna auf Naxos, directed by Caetano Villela. He will also sing Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde, and Verdi’s Messa da Réquiem at the Amazonas Festival. Mr. Hendrick, in his 2007 debut with the Metropolitan Opera, appeared as Menelas in Strauss’ Die Ägyptische Helena, conducted by Fabio Luisi and directed by David Fielding. In other 2007 appearances, Mr. Hendrick performed with Esa Pekka-Salonen and the Los Angeles Philharmonic with an all-Russian cast, in scenes from both of Shostakovich’s operas, as Sergei in Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk and the title role of the Nose in The Nose. He appeared with the London Philharmonic Orchestra as the tenor soloist in Mahler’s Das Klagende Lied, in the opening night gala of the London’s Philharmonic’s 75th anniversary season and Maestro Vladimir Jurowski’s inaugural concert as new Music Director. Mr. Hendrick rejoined Vladimir Jurowski and London Philharmonic Orchestra in November as The Stranger in Korngold's Das Wunder der Heliane. Other recent appearances include Don José in Carmen, conducted by Antonello Allemandi and directed by Francisco Lopez, with LIV Festival Ópera at the Palacio de la Opera in La Coruña (Galicia), Spain, and in Santander (Cantabria), Spain at the Palacio de Festivales. As Don José, he has appeared in former seasons with Opera Pacific (Orange County, California), conducted by John DeMain and directed by Ron Daniels. He has appeared as Don José in Carmen with New York City Opera in three different seasons, conducted by George Manahan, Steven White and Gary Thor Wedow. Also with New York City Opera, he performed the Male Chorus in Britten’s The Rape of Lucretia, conducted by Daniel Beckwith and directed by Christopher Alden. Mr. Hendrick appeared as Bacchus in Strauss’ Ariadne auf Naxos with Seattle Opera, conducted by Gerard Schwartz, L’Opera de Montrèal, conducted by Jacques Lacomb, and Pittsburgh Opera, conducted by John Mauceri, in a production produced and stage directed by Christopher Alexander. Mr. Hendrick has performed Laca in Janácek’s Jenůfa with Asociacion Bilbaina de Amigos de la Opera in Bilbao (Bizkaia), Spain, conducted by Jiři Kout and produced and stage directed by David Pountney; with Utah Opera, conducted by Robert Tweteen and stage directed by Thor Steingraber; and with Sarasota Opera, conducted by Victor DeRenzi and stage directed by John Hoomes. He has sung Tito Vespasian in Mozart’s La clemenza di Tito, with the National Symphony conducted by Christopher Hogwood at Washington’s Kennedy Center, and as the title role of Parsifal in Parsifal, led by Sir Andrew Davis and stage directed by Nicholas Lehnhoff, with Lyric Opera of Chicago. He appeared as Lieutenant B.F. Pinkerton in Puccini’s Madama Butterfly, conducted by Daniel Hege, at Syracuse Opera. He has presented the title role of Hoffmann in Offenbach’s Les Contes d”Hoffmann, conducted by Mark Flint and stage directed by Michael Capasso, and Count Vaudémont in Tchaikovsky’s Iolanta, conducted by Timothy Lindberg and stage directed by Albert Takazaukas, at Dicapo Opera Theatre in New York, and Levko in Rimsky-Korsakov’s May Night, conducted by Valery Ryvkin and stage directed by Darko Tresnak, with Sarasota Opera. In a U.S. stage premiere, he performed the role of protagonist composer Živny in Janacek's Osud with Bard Summerscape Festival at the Frank Gehry-designed Fisher Center, conducted by Leon Botstein. He sang the role of Midas in Strauss’ Die Liebe der Danae with Radio Filharmonisch Orkest Holland, conducted by Edo DeWaart, at the Concertbebouw in Amsterdam. He has appeared as Lennie Small in Carlisle Floyd’s Of Mice and Men with Washington National Opera, conducted by Karen Keltner and produced and directed by Francesca Zambello, for which he was named Washington National Opera’s Artist of the Year for that season. He has also performed the role of Lennie Small in Of Mice and Men with Arizona Opera, conducted by Kirk Muspratt and directed by Anne Ewers, and with Utah Opera, conducted by Karen Keltner and directed by Pamela Berlin. With Carlisle Floyd’s Susannah, he has performed the role of Sam Polk with Opera Carolina and Toledo Opera, conducted by Louis Salmeno and directed by Matthew Lata. Mr. Hendrick has appeared in Mahler’s Das Klagende Lied with Rotterdams Philharmonisch in Rotterdam and Utrecht, in The Netherlands. As the tenor soloist in Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, he has appeared with many U.S. orchestras including Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Jeffrey Kahane; Utah Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Stanislaw Skrowaczewski; Virginia Symphony Orchestra, conducted by JoAnn Falletta; Pacific Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Carl St. Clair; Tucson Symphony Orchestra, conducted by George Hanson; Brevard Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Christopher Confessore; Fort Wayne Symphony, conducted by Edward Tchivzhel; Florida Orchestra, conducted by Stefan Sanderling; and with Kentucky Symphony, conducted by James R. Cassidy. With Detroit Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of Gennady Rozhdestvensky, he bowed as the soloist in Kodaly’s Psalmus Hungaricus. He has appeared with Milwaukee Symphony Symphony as Prince Shuisky in Mussorgskij’s Boris Gondunov, conducted by Andreas Delfs, and has performed Janacek’s Glagolitic Mass, conducted by Leon Botstein, at the Bard Festival in the U.S. He has performed Verdi’s Messa da Requiem with National Symphony Orchestra in Bethesda, Maryland, led by Stan Engebretson; with Syracuse Symphony Orchestra, led by Daniel Hege; and with Huntsville Symphony Orchestra, led by James Paul. He has presented Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde with Chautauqua Symphony Orchestra, led by Uriel Segal; and with Pensacola Symphony, led by Peter Rubardt. He performed and recorded with the Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra and Chorus in Bratislava, Republic of Slovakia, conducted by Kirk Trevor, as the tenor soloist in Shacharit, based on the Jewish morning worship service, composed by Meira Warshauer, released on the Albany Records label. Mr. Hendrick has presented Liszt’s A Faust Symphony with Spokane Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Fabio Mechetti, and Handel’s Messiah with Virginia Symphony, conducted by Robert Cross. |
