Jose Luis Sola began his musical studies with the Boys Choir of Navarra (Spain) under the guidance of Father Goicoechea. Tenor Ricardo Visus heard him and, recognizing the extraordinary qualities of this impressive young singer, agreed to take Jose Luis on as a student. Over the last few years, Visus has worked with Sola expanding repertoire and introducing him to the lyric stage of concert and opera.
Jose Luis has won several important prizes, including the highly competitive Julian Gayarre Competition and Scholarship in 2002. He was awarded a Scholarship “Extraordinaire” from the government of Navarra, and was the recipient of the special “Critic’s Award”, as well as “Best Singer of Spanish Music” from the International Singing Competition of Bilbao. In recent years José Luis has become popular as a soloist performing various concerts of opera and zarzuela. In 2001 and 2002 he performed in a series of concerts with various singers and the Navarra Symphony Orchestra. In 2003, he performed throughout the Basque region and in Navarra, as well as performing a recital for the Bilbao Music Society organized by the Alfredo Kraus Music Association, focused on arias which made famous to Alfreo Kraus and Julian Gayarre. Sola has also been increasingly in demand across Europe. In May of 2002, Sola sang the role of Ernesto in Donizetti’s DON PASQUALE in the Teatro A. Bonci (Italy). In December of that same year he performed the Zarzuela EL GRUMETE by Emilio Arrieta in the Gayarre Theatre in Pamplona, Spain. In May of 2003 he performed in the Lyric Gala at the Monumental Theatre of Madrid with the RTVE (Spanish National Radio and Television Orchestra). This gala was broadcasted by Spanish National Television. Sola performed arias from L´ELISIR D´AMORE and L´ARLESIANA. In June of 2003, he performed the role of Edgardo in Donizetti’s LUCIA DI LAMMERMOOR in Sabadell, and in November of that year he sang Gounod’s FAUST in Barcelona. He was the solo tenor in Gounod’s MESSA SOLENNELLE DE SAINTE CÉCILLE performed in Zaragoza in 2002. He also performed Rossini’s PETITE MESSE SOLENNELLE in the Gayarre Theater, in the Universtiy of Navarre and the STABAT MATER by Haydn in the Church of Santa Maria of Ondarroa. He sang Brahms’ LIEBESLIEDER WALTZES in the Pablo Sarasate Conservatoire of Pamplona in 2003. Then in January of 2004 he performed the zarzuela MARUXA by Vives in the Gayarre Theatre of Pamplona. In 2004 Sola toured several cities in Central America, performing opera arias, zarzuela and lieder. He also performed the Rossini´s STABAT MATER, and sang the tenor role in Verdi’s REQUIEM in Antigua (Guatemala). Later he also sang the tenor role in THE LAST SEVEN WORDS OF CHRIST by Teodore Dubois in Pamplona. In May he performed the role of Katiuska in THE MERRY WIDOW in Tenerife (Canary Islands) and five concerts of arias and opera duets in the Basque Country. In October he sang the STABAT MATER by Dvorak in the Baluarte Auditorium of Pamplona with the Orfeon Pamplones and the Orchestra of North Oporto. He has sung the part of Peppe in Donizetti’s opera RITA at the Teatro Real of Madrid in November. In December he sang LUCREZIA BORGIA, and a concert of Donizetti’s arias in the Campoamor Theatre of Oviedo. In April of 2005 Sola was introduced to audiences in the Upper Midwest in the United States by Visus, former professor of voice at Moorhead State University. His appearances included concert performances and master classes in voice for individual students as well as choral singers within educational settings. These appearances were received well both by student participants and audiences. In 2006 he toured again USA succesfully. He sang the Mozart´s REQUIEM in Madrid and in the Auditorio of Alcobendas; DOÑA FRANCISQUITA in St.Gallen Opera Theatre. He also made his debut at the Lausanne Opera and performed LA TRAVIATA and MANON at the Teatro Campoamor in Oviedo. He sang again the Mozart´s REQUIEM in Madrid with the Comunidad de Madrid Ocrhestra, Ainhoa Arteta and Stefano Palatchi conducted by Karl Sollak. With Arteta and Palatchi he sang the premiere of the CANTATA-FANTASY by composer Lorenzo Palomo conducted by Miguel Angel Gómez Martínez in December 2006 in Bilbao. In 2007 he sang LES DIALOGUES DES CARMELITES (Chevalier de la Force) in ABAO (Bilbao). Later in Bilbao too he was claimed as Tamino in DIE ZAUBERFLÖTE conducted by Jean Christophe Spinosi. DOÑA FRANCISQUITA in Teatro Arriaga in Bilbao and FALSTAFF (Fenton) in Costa Rica. He made his debut at Michigan Opera Theatre as “Christian” in David DiChiera´s new opera CYRANO, Nadir in LES PECHEURS DE PERLES at Teatro Gayarre in Pamplona and RIGOLETTO (Duca di Mantova) in Wielki Theatre (Warsaw). In March 2008 he sang again the same role in this theatre. Recently he has had a big success as Tonio LA FILLE DU REGIMENT in Teatro Villamarta in Jerez. His future engagements include the main role of FAUST in Costa Rica, DIALOGUES DES CARMELITES (Chevalier de la Forrce) in Oviedo, FAUST in Wielki Theatre in Warsaw. He will sing Puccini’s MESSA DI GLORIA with Orfeon Donostiarra, Orquesta Sinfónica de Euskadi and Maestro Antonello Allemandi. He will as well sing Nadir LES PECHEURS DE PERLES in Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires. |
