Tenor Luis Dámaso was born in Madrid, where he made his vocal studies with Antonio Blancas, Director of the Singing High School.
In 1995 he won the “Luciano Pavarotti International Voice Competition” in Philadelphia. In the “I Cestelli” contest in Stuttgart was chosen Best Tenor. In Spain he has been awarded in the following contests: “Francisco Alonso”, “Jacinto e Inocencio Guerrero” and “Jaime Aragall”. In 1999 he received the “Federico Romero Award” from the SGAE (Spanish General Society of Authors and Publishers). His first important role was Rodolfo in La Bohème at Teatro de La Zarzuela in Madrid in 1996, and afterwards he sang the title roles of the following operas: La Traviata (Rennes, Nancy, Jerez, Córdoba, Avilés), Faust (La Coruña), L´elisire d´amore , Il Tabarro, Lucia di Lammermoor and Goyescas (Madrid), Idomeneo and Alcina (Bilbao), Il Domino Nero (Jesi), Marina (Valladolid), La Vida Breve (Berlín, Saarbrücken, Nancy, La Coruña), La Dolores (Santander, Jerez, La Coruña) and El Gato Montés (Málaga). He has sung the zarzuela repertoire at Teatro Real and Teatro de la Zarzuela in Madrid, Campoamor in Oviedo and Maestranza in Sevilla, including the following titles: Doña Francisquita, Luisa Fernanda, La Tabernera del Puerto, El Huesped del Sevillano, Los Gavilanes, Jugar con Fuego, La Chulapona, La Bruja, La Canción del Olvido, El Barberillo de Lavapiés and La Leyenda del Beso. In the field of the Oratorio he sang Messa di Gloria by Puccini (T. Real de Madrid, Auditorio Nacional de Madrid), Stabat Mater by Rossini (T. Monumental de Madrid, Catedral de Castellón), Mass in C by Beethoven (Bilbao, Segovia) and Miserere by Eslava (Catedral de Sevilla). He has given numerous recitals in concert halls and theatres in Europe and the United States, including the one in honor of Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos at Teatro Real de Madrid, and the one in honor of Alfredo Kraus in La Solana; concert with Renata Scotto at Auditorio Nacional de Madrid, the opening of the Auditorio "Juan Carlos I" in Tenerife, and galas in the following theatres: Monumental in Madrid, Guimerá in Tenerife, Auditorio de Santiago in Compostela, Teatro Storchi in Módena, Konzerthaus in Berlín, Konzertsaal in Stuttgart, Staatstheater in Saarbrücken, Academy of Music in Philadelphia. He has recorded for EMI the opereta La Niña del Boticario by Julian Santos Carrión, and Il Domino Nero by Lauro Rossi for BONGIOVANNI, which were recorded for the first time in both cases.“Grabaciones Inéditas del Teatro de la Zarzuela” and “Otello” (PHILARTIS) with Friedrich Haider and Oviedo Filarmonía. Luis Dámaso has sung, among others, with these orchestras: Nacional de España, Orquesta de RTVE, Sinfónica de Madrid, Sinfónica de Galicia, Sinfónica de Sevilla, Sinfónica de Euskadi, Orquesta de Cámara Andrés Segovia, Sinfónica de la Radio de Berlín, Sinfónica de Nancy, Les Talens Lyriques, Sinfónica Nacional de Ucrania, etc., and has worked with these conductors: Frühbeck de Burgos, E. García Asensio, Gómez Martínez, Odón Alonso, Ros Marbá, Victor Pablo Pérez, Miguel Ortega, Elena Herrera, Janos Acs, Aldo Ceccato, Christopher Rousset, Ralf Weikert,Giuliano Carella, Kamal Khan, etc. He has worked with stage directors such as José Tamayo, Emilio Sagi, Miguel Narros,José Carlos Plaza, Gerardo Malla, Gustavo Tambascio, Pier Luigi Pizzi and Maurizio Nichetti. Recently he has sung in the production of Don Giovanni as Don Ottavio in Gijón and soon he will record “Le Villi” and “Macbeth” (Philartis) and will offer concerts of both recordings in Oviedo and in Munich altogether with Friedrich Haider. |
