Most of the credit belongs to de performers, for this proyect clearly means much to them. It needs a special voice to focus the attention so clearly on itself, and Mena’s fits the bill. He has an extraordinary range; the break in the lower register is virtually imperceptible, and in Iste Sanctus he takes the alto line completely convincingly. In the middle and upper ranges his tone is very rounded, full and clear, with no hint of strain; rather like a cornet, in fact. His use of ornamentation is discreet and just sufficent to spring the ocasional surprise on those who know the music well.
